Can I reduce my bill costs when I’m travelling overseas?
Travel can be expensive, so here are some tips to help reduce your costs.
Take me to
To help reduce unwanted international roaming costs:
- Disable International Roaming and Day Pass, or remove your SIM before your travel.
- If you’re using a dual SIM or eSIM, disable International Roaming on the secondary (unused) service.
Reducing voicemail charges
You’ll incur international roaming charges:
- When someone calls and leaves a MessageBank message.
- When you call and listen to your MessageBank messages.
- If you use SMS to have MessageBank call you.
To avoid the cost of a missed call, set unconditional diversion to voicemail in your phone settings. You won’t be able to receive phone calls while unconditional diversions are in place, but you can still make calls and retrieve voicemail at standard roaming rates.
Reducing data charges
To help reduce your data usage:
- Turn off mobile data when you’re asleep. Visit your manufacturer or our device guides for instructions.
- Close unnecessary apps.
- Turn off location tracking and GPS.
- Keep an eye out for usage updates sent to you by SMS.
- Track your usage in the My Telstra app.
- Take advantage of free Wi-Fi calling.
- Download and save streaming music and video content before you leave.
