DJAARA

Telstra Best of Business Awards Business of the Year and National Indigenous Excellence Award Winner

DJAARA is a traditional owner corporation that represents the Dja Dja Wurrung People of Central Victoria. It is dedicated to preserving cultural heritage, promoting environmental stewardship and enhancing community wellbeing. The organisation leads initiatives in land management, cultural revitalisation, and sustainable economic development by blending traditional knowledge with modern practices.

A remarkable business founded by 15 visionaries on a veranda has transformed ancient traditional knowledge into a thriving, modern enterprise. By commercialising traditional practices in agriculture and aquaculture – including the development of the largest yabby farm in the Southern Hemisphere – DJAARA balances cultural integrity with commercial success.

Its efforts support environmental care, cultural education and community growth, while advocating for the rights and recognition of Dja Dja Wurrung People.

"Our organisation is multi-faceted. We're a First Nations organisation that's about supporting Dja Dja Wurrung People and Country, and the broader community, but we're very sophisticated: environmental sciences, natural resource management, forest gardening, fire management. There are so many things that we do, and we love working with communities," said Rodney Carter, DJAARA Group CEO.

The organisation’s holistic approach integrates the natural world with cultural governance, ensuring that traditional owners have a seat at the decision-making table.

This innovative model is a “power play for the future”. With a 100-year plan focused on future generations and sustainable growth, they are commercial while caring for country and people.

For Rodney, receiving this recognition was particularly gratifying and a testament to the dedication shown by Dja Dja Wurrung People to preserving Djandak (Country) for generations. It’s also a reflection of the positive outcomes that a Traditional Owner-led economy and self-determination can have for First Nations communities.

It's amazing to be nationally awarded; it's almost surreal. But I think, if you're realistic, it's just a great recognition actually of who we are and what we do – the achievement.

DJAARA’s incredible work was recognised as the Business of the Year and National Indigenous Excellence Award Winner at the Telstra Best of Business Awards.
