We’ll check your maximum speeds later

If the maximum speed at your address is below the maximum speed of the plan you’ve chosen, we will advise you of the options available to you which may include (i) remaining on your current plan; (ii) moving to a lower priced plan (if one is available); (iii) cancelling your plan at no cost (not available to upgrading customers). If your options include changing or cancelling your plan, you’ll receive a proportionate refund for the period you didn’t receive the full benefit of your chosen plan.

Things to know when moving home

Some useful info to help your move go smoothly.

What equipment to take – and what to leave

Take your modem with you.

Please bring your Telstra modem with you when you move. This will ensure you get connected fast. We don’t supply a new Telstra modem for moves, unless your current modem is incompatible.

Don’t take the nbn or Opticomm connection box!

Leave behind any nbn™ or Opticomm connection box. Your new home will have one already, if not we’ll arrange for someone to come and install one for you.

Understanding any additional charges

Information on other costs you may incur as part of your move.

nbn New Development Charge

If you’re in a new development and not already connected to the nbn or Opticomm access network, you may be charged a new development fee to connect your premises to the network. If applicable, we will invoice that charge to you.

Extra charges may apply for non-standard or professional install of Telstra, nbn co or Opticomm   equipment and for premises in new developments.

Got Foxtel with us and want to keep watching?

We can arrange to move your Foxtel connection to your new address. Please bring your Foxtel equipment with you. You’ll need to pay a $235 charge for a Foxtel technician to visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you choose the self-installation option you’ll need to give us at least 2 business days’ notice. If you require a technician, or choose the professional installation option, you’ll need to give us at least 7 business days’ notice.

The more notice you give, the more likely we can complete your move on your preferred day – especially if a nbn co or Telstra technician visit is required.

Their purpose is to help move your home internet exactly when and how you asked.

They will:

  1. Review your order for accuracy
  2. Contact you and introduce themselves and double check key details (if they miss you, you will receive an SMS)
  3. Behind the scenes if there are any issues, they will work to resolve them without you knowing. But if needed they will contact you
  4. On the day, they will track your move and reach out to ensure everything is connected as expected.

If you need a technician your Moving home Specialist will send an order confirmation outlining the details.

A technician may need to visit if:

  • Your new address hasn’t had an active phone line for a long time
  • We conduct a serviceability check and it identifies the need for a Telstra technician
  • Your house has been recently renovated or subdivided
  • Your house is a new development, a knock down rebuild or is connecting to the nbn for the first time
  • You want a new outlet or move an existing one to a more suitable place at additional cost (A technician will provide a quote before proceeding)
  • You’re a Priority Assistance customer

If you’re taking up a service on the nbn or Opticomm network and moving to a recently built property that hasn’t had a fixed internet connection before, a new development charge   may apply.

nbn co charges $300 for first-time connections in new developments and $297 for an additional connection requiring installation of additional nbn equipment & Opticomm charges $300 for first-time connections in new developments. Opticomm also charges a new connection fee of between $330 and $550 when there is no existing connection. The amount will depend on the type of connection you require.

A Foxtel technician will be required if you’re moving your Foxtel and there was no previous Foxtel connection at the address.

Moving Foxtel from Telstra is a separate cost of $135. You’ll need to take your existing equipment with you and a Foxtel technician will visit your new home to complete the process.

There may be other scenarios where a technician will be required, so once you’ve completed your online order, we’ll do a serviceability test to identify and notify you within 24-48 hours if you need a technician.

  • Call out fee - $95 inside business hours and $296 outside business hours
  • Additional connections or outlets - $120 with standard installation per outlet
  • Additional connection outlets - $192 with non standard installation per outlet

If you miss your appointment or cancel it without telling us at least 24 hours beforehand you will be charged $99.

Your plan will remain unchanged unless you wish to change to a newer plan or add new products or services to your account.

If you’re moving to an address that’s serviced by a different telephone exchange, in most cases you’ll be able to keep the same phone number, but if you can’t we’ll provide a new one.

In many cases you won’t need a new modem and can take your Telstra smart modem with you. Leave behind other equipment such as the network termination unit supplied by nbn or Opticomm.

However, if you are changing the technology type you are connecting to, we will provide a compatible modem included for use   as part of your plan. If you leave within 24 months, return your modem or pay a $200 non return fee.

It’s unlikely, but if this is the case, you’ll need to provide documentation to prove that you’re moving into the new address.

If you want to maintain your home internet and home phone services, and the nbn network has been rolled out to your new address, you’ll have to connect to it.

Moving your Foxtel
If you’re moving your Foxtel with Telstra and there’s no previous Foxtel connection at your new address, you’ll need to pay a $135 fee for a Foxtel technician to visit your new home and complete the process.

There may be other scenarios where a technician will be required, so once you’ve completed your online order, we’ll do a serviceability test to identify and notify you within 24-48 hours if you need a technician.

How much does it cost for extra connections or outlets?

  • Call out fee - $95 inside business hours and $296 outside business hours
  • Additional connections or outlets - $120 with standard installation per outlet
  • Additional connection outlets - $192 with non standard installation per outlet

In most cases if you book your move before 1pm Monday to Friday we have your service connected within two business days.

Can I choose the date my internet is connected at the new address?

You can request the date you would like to have your internet connected by and we will aim to have it done by that day, provided you book the move at least 2 business days before that date.

We won't charge you if there is a break between your Telstra internet service being disconnected at your old address and reconnected at your new address.

Things you need to know

Important

An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your maximum attainable speed after connection and let you know if your line is not able to achieve the maximum speed of your plan.

The nbn™ tier figures represent wholesale maximum network speeds during off-peak periods. The nbn™  tier figures and ‘typical busy period speeds’ are not measures of customers’ actual in-premises speeds, which may be slower. Not all customers receive these speeds. In some cases, the nbn™ tier figures and the typical busy period speeds are similar. Find out more about speeds on the nbn network with Telstra

Plan prices

Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions). If you don’t like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons.  If you cancel, just pay out your device, accessories and services in full, and you will receive a pro-rata refund for your plan charge for the remainder of your month.

Speed Add-ons

Typical busy period speeds for the new nbn tiers Superfast and Ultrafast are an estimate only. We do not have sufficient data yet to calculate the typical busy period speed of these add-ons. Actual speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including in-home setup and wiring, For ordinary personal domestic use. For important information on speeds see nbn key facts sheet (PDF, 81KB)

Service Availability

Services not available to all areas or premises.

If you’re in a new development and not already connected to the nbn network, nbn co may charge $300 to connect your premises to the nbn network. If applicable, we will bill that charge to you. Once you are connected to nbn fibre, you won’t be able to move to our copper network. Extra charges may apply for non-standard or professional install of Telstra or nbn co equipment and for premises in new developments.

Telstra Smart Modem™

Mobile backup is available to premises in 4G coverage areas. Check coverage at telstra.com/coverage. Your mobile backup connection is capped at 25Mbps for downloads and 5Mbps for uploads. Actual speeds may be lower due to local conditions and content accessed.

Medical security alarms, lift phones and fire indicator panels

If you have alarms such as back-to-base security alarm or medi-alert connected to your home phone service, it’s important you contact your medical or security provider to check if they’re compatible with the service and identify what alternatives are available.
