Mobile Satellite

Go where life takes you with Telstra Mobile Satellite

Telstra Mobile Satellite is powered by the Iridium satellite network, a world-leading global satellite network that provides low-latency, weather-resilient connectivity in more places on Earth.

Why choose Telstra Mobile Satellite?

Our Mobile Satellite plans and Iridium handsets allow you to call and text from Australia's most remote places.

Satellite phones connect through satellites in orbit, making them reliable in regional areas where there aren't any mobile towers. All you need is a clear wide view of the sky.

Unmatched global connectivity

Iridium's unique constellation of low-orbiting satellites provide connectivity across the globe.

Connect with a 12 or 24-month plan

Our Mobile Satellite plans offer pay-per-use options and competitive monthly fees.

Sturdy handsets with emergency access

Frequently asked questions

In Australia, call 000 with an active Telstra Mobile Satellite SIM, or call 112 without one. Outside Australia, dial the local emergency number.

Yes. You will need an approved Iridium-certified handset to use a Telstra Mobile Satellite SIM service.

Use the international number format for calls. You can’t call 000, 190, 1800, 13, 12, or Directory Assistance when roaming. Call 112 for emergency services without a SIM card.

All Iridium handsets work like regular mobile phones when paired with a service using a physical Telstra Mobile Satellite SIM.

SatPhone Shop has a range of accessories to complement your Telstra Mobile Satellite experience. These include protective cases, batteries, chargers, docks, antennas, and cables.

Iridium's satellite architecture creates a web of coverage across the entire planet. The satellites are cross-linked in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), providing low-latency, weather resilient services unlike any other satellite provider.

At only 780 kilometres from the Earth, Iridium's LEO network means pole-to-pole coverage, shorter transmission paths, stronger signals, lower latency, and shorter registration time than most other networks.

Things you need to know

Coverage on the Iridium satellite network: To use your service, your handset must be within the Iridium satellite network coverage area in Australia or other countries where satellite devices are lawful. Coverage requires a clear, wide line of sight to the sky, with the antenna pointing straight up. Service quality may be affected by atmospheric conditions, environment, and surroundings, such as thick canopy cover or narrow gorges. Indoor use requires an external antenna. ‘Australia’ includes up to 200 nautical miles out to sea and all external territories except Antarctica. Iridium products and services cannot be exported to embargoed destinations like Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, or Syria without U.S. government authorisation.

Numbering: Telstra Mobile Satellite services have a 10-digit number starting with 01471. Number portability with non-Telstra Mobile Satellite services is not compatible.

Billing: Telstra Mobile Satellite services are billed separately from other services.
