How Telstra works with Emergency Call Services

Telstra has Triple Zero Emergency Service Answer Points located around Australia that function as the Emergency Call Person (ECP) for 000 and 112 emergency call numbers under the Telecommunications (Emergency Call Service) Determination 2019.

When a person calls 000 or 112, they speak to a Telstra Triple Zero Emergency Call Service Operator first. As directed by the caller, Telstra transfers the call to the required Emergency Service Organisation (ESO) – Police, Fire or Ambulance services. The emergency response is provided by the requested ESO. 

Emergency calls to the Triple Zero Emergency Call Service can be made without charge to the caller, whether the service is active, suspended, disconnected (only applicable to a Public Mobile Telephone Service) or out of credit for a pre-paid service.

The Triple Zero Emergency Call Service should only be used when seeking an emergency response from a Police, Fire or Ambulance service in a life-threatening or time-critical situation.

It is an offence to make a non-emergency call to the Triple Zero Emergency Call Service under the Criminal Code Act.
