What's extra data and how is it different to excess data charges?

Extra data replaces the excess data usage rates that in the past would’ve been charged when you went over your data allowance. Extra data is now included with all of Telstra’s mobile and mobile data plans and automatically gives you a 1GB block of data for $10 when you go over your monthly allowance.
- If you use that 1GB before the end of your billing period, we'll automatically add another 1GB of data for $10
- Any extra data you don’t use expires at the end of your monthly billing period
- You can only use extra data in Australia

If you are on the Telstra Upfront Mobile Plan, you will not be charged excess data charges and you won't have the option of adding on an extra data pack. Instead, if you exceed your data allowance, you can continue to access data at speeds to up to 1.5Mpbs and won't be charged any more for that usage.
Frequently asked questions
We’ll add 1GB of data for $10 which will be shared by all the shared data services on that account – we don’t add individual data blocks to each shared service. All the devices sharing the account can use the extra data blocks.
If the 1GB is used up before the end of your billing period, we'll automatically add an additional 1GB of data for another $10 each. At the end of your billing period, the extra data will expire and you'll return to your normal monthly data allowance.
Sign in to My Telstra and go to Services.
Good to know: Services that share data will display usage against the shared data pool on the main page of the My Telstra app.
We'll send you an SMS when you've used 50%, 85% and 100% of your monthly data allowance. We’ll also send you an SMS when we add a 1GB block of extra data.
To view your data usage, sign in to My Telstra:
- On the homepage, find the service in the Account overview section
- Your current monthly usage and days remaining until your next billing cycle will be displayed
- Select the Manage link, then scroll down and select Data usage for a detailed breakdown of your data usage.
