Buying an additional nbn service

Most customers only need a single service at their address. Here’s some information about having an additional service.

What is an additional nbn service?

An additional nbn service is an extra service to the one that’s already set up at your address. If you order an additional service, we may need to install a new line if one isn’t available at the address, and you’ll need to set up another modem.

While most homes only need one service, there are a few examples of when you, your family or business might need more than one: 

  • You run a small to medium sized business at home and you need multiple services. 
  • You need an additional service to support working from home.
  • Your residence is sub divided and you may be living in a duplex or granny flat. 
  • You live in a share house of heavy internet users

If you don’t have a spare line available, we’ll need to install one. This means it may take a little longer to get online, and additional fees may apply. Whether you have a spare line or need one installed, you’ll need an additional modem and a new plan. This means your household could be paying for multiple nbn services.

If you’re with another provider and want to transfer to Telstra instead, we can arrange to disconnect your existing service and set you up with a Telstra service. You can shop nbn plans to get started.

The speed we estimate for an additional service may be different from the speed we estimate for the primary service. That’s because we estimate each line at the address. Every line is unique and factors such as the age of the copper cable, the quality of the connectors, or environmental damage can impact the speed.

  • First month for $1 offer: Available on $95 and $110 plans. For new customers only. Offer ends 10th of January 2022.

  • Important: An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your maximum attainable speed after connection and let you know if your line is not able to achieve the maximum speed of your plan.

  • The nbn™ tier figures represent wholesale maximum network speeds during off-peak periods. The nbn™  tier figures and ‘typical busy period speeds’ are not measures of customers’ actual in-premises speeds, which may be slower. Not all customers receive these speeds. In some cases, the nbn™ tier figures and the typical busy period speeds are similar. Find out more about speeds on the nbn network with Telstra.

  • Plan prices: Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions).  If you don’t like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons.  If you cancel, just pay out your device, accessories and services in full.

  • Installation: Standard installation includes self-installation of your modem, eligibility criteria applies. Extra charges apply for non-standard installation of Telstra and NBN Co equipment and for premises in new developments.

  • nbn® New Development Charge: If you’re in a new development without existing phone or internet infrastructure, Opticomm may impose a $300 New Development Charge (NDC) or New Connection Charge (NCC) of up to $550 to connect you to the Opticomm access network. This includes new lots, subdivisions, and granny flats with a separate address from the primary residence. If applicable, we will bill that charge to you, and we will let you know at the time of confirming your order and you will have the option to cancel. Extra charges may apply for non-standard or professional installation of Telstra or Opticomm and for premises in new developments. Once you are connected to nbn fibre, you won’t be able to move to our copper network.

  • Telstra Smart Modem™: Mobile backup is available to premises in 4G coverage areas. Check coverage at telstra.com/coverage. Your mobile backup connection is capped at 25Mbps for downloads and 5Mbps for uploads. Actual speeds may be lower due to local conditions and content accessed.

  • Medical security alarms, lift phones and fire indicator panels: If you have a medical alarm, lift phone or fire indicator panel, you need to register these services with nbn co by calling 1800 227 300. Medical alarms can also be registered online at nbn.com.au/medicalregister. It’s important to understand that registering these services won’t prevent them from being disconnected when moving to the nbn network. As well as registering, you must also contact your medical alarm, lift phone or fire indicator panel provider to arrange the transfer of these services to the nbn network
