A locked device is “locked” to the Telstra mobile network, meaning you will need to use a Telstra SIM card with it to use data and make and receive calls and texts. If you opt for a Pre-Paid device, this will come with a Telstra SIM card to help get you started.
An unlocked device can be used with any other mobile network and SIM card.
All phones listed on this Budget phones page are 4G compatible, but only some are 5G compatible. For more information, select the phone you’re interested in and check the product specifications to see if it’s 5G compatible.
Note: Most of the time, the product name will mention 5G if the device is 5G compatible.
Voice over LTE (VoLTE) lets you make clearer phone calls over 4G (LTE) networks. Mobile network operators around the world are beginning to shut down their 3G networks, meaning VoLTE will be increasingly required to make or receive phone calls (including emergency calls) when using their networks abroad.
The Telstra 3G network closed down in 2024. To enable VoLTE on your mobile phone, head to our support page to find the right instructions for your device type.

Our speeds
Speeds vary for reasons like location, distance from base stations, terrain, user numbers, hardware/software configuration, download source and upload destination.
Download speeds are capped on our 4G and 5G network on some plans. Your capped download speed is the maximum potential download speed for data included in your recharge. Factors impacting typical speed include location, distance from the base station, local conditions, concurrent users, hardware and software configuration and download/upload destination.
